Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about eligibility, treatment, monitoring, ongoing care, and getting started.

Eligibility
Am I eligible for treatment at BCC?

To be eligible, you must have a BMI of 30 kg/m² or above, or a BMI of 27 kg/m² or above with at least one qualifying weight-related health condition — such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, or prediabetes. Patients with Type 2 diabetes and a BMI of 27 kg/m² or above are also eligible. For patients of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African, or African-Caribbean ethnicity, these thresholds are reduced by 2.5 kg/m².

Meeting the BMI threshold is the starting point, not a guarantee of treatment. Your full medical history, current medications, and individual circumstances are all assessed by your prescriber at your initial consultation before any treatment decision is made.

For patients with diabetes, complex health conditions, or multiple medications, treatment also requires coordination with your GP or other treating clinicians as part of your assessment.

Yes. The Body Composition Clinic is only able to treat patients residing in the UK.

Our service operates within a carefully governed clinical and regulatory framework. The pharmacy and laboratory partners we work with are rigorously vetted, licensed, and regulated specifically to operate within the UK — this includes the licences, accreditations, and compliance standards that allow them to safely dispense prescription medication and process clinical blood testing on our behalf. This framework, and the safeguards it provides, does not extend beyond UK borders.

Because your safety depends on this entire regulated chain — from prescribing, to dispensing, to testing — remaining intact, we’re unable to treat patients residing outside the UK. You’ll need a permanent UK address to receive your medication and access blood testing through our network.

Yes. Patients with Type 2 diabetes and a BMI of 27 kg/m² or above are eligible for treatment at BCC and are classified as Category C patients. Because diabetes management interacts with the medicines we prescribe, additional coordination with your GP and diabetes management team is required before treatment can start. Your prescriber will guide you through this process.

For patients without complex health conditions, having a GP is not a strict requirement. However, we strongly encourage all patients to be registered with a GP. For patients with Type 2 diabetes, complex health conditions, or multiple medications, contact with your GP or relevant specialist is a mandatory safety requirement before treatment can start. If you do not have a GP and fall into one of these categories, treatment at BCC may not be possible until a suitable clinical contact is identified.

Yes. Patients of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African, or African-Caribbean ethnicity are eligible at a BMI 2.5 kg/m² lower than the standard thresholds. This reflects well-established clinical evidence that these groups carry a higher health risk at lower BMI values. Your prescriber will apply the appropriate threshold at your initial consultation.

How do I choose the right consultation type?

We offer two types of initial consultations.

Initial Consultation is a clinical assessment based on the information you share in your intake form and during the consultation. It does not include blood testing. This option may suit you if you’re not yet sure whether treatment is right for you and want to speak with a clinician first, or if you have a full set of blood tests from within the last 4 weeks that cover all our required markers, which you can upload as a valid report.

However, we’re unable to start your treatment without a full baseline blood test — your prescriber needs this to assess you safely and to have a reference point for your future monitoring. If you choose Initial Consultation without providing a valid recent blood test, this will still need to be arranged before treatment can begin.

Initial Consultation + Investigation includes your first blood test, arranged for you as part of the service. If you’d like a complete assessment and the opportunity to start treatment as soon as possible following your consultation, this is the most straightforward option.

If you’re providing your own recent blood test, it must cover all of the markers below. We require the full picture because these are the same markers we monitor throughout your treatment — your baseline result is what we compare against at every future review to check you’re progressing safely.

CategoryMarkers
MetabolicHbA1c, glucose, insulin
Lipid profileTotal cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, cholesterol/HDL ratio
Full blood countRed and white blood cells, haemoglobin, platelets
Kidney functionCreatinine, eGFR, urea, sodium, potassium, chloride
Electrolytes & mineralsCalcium (adjusted), magnesium, phosphate
Liver functionALT, AST, ALP, GGT, total bilirubin, albumin
Thyroid functionTSH, FT4, FT3
Nutritional markersVitamin B12, Vitamin D, iron, ferritin
PancreaticPancreatic amylase, lipase

If your recent results don’t cover all of these markers, please book Initial Consultation + Investigation so we can arrange your blood test for you.

No. Your Initial Consultation (and Investigation, if selected) is a clinical assessment to determine whether treatment is safe and appropriate for you — it is not a guarantee that treatment will follow.

Your safety always comes first. If your prescriber identifies any clinical concern, or determines that treatment isn’t suitable for you for any reason, treatment will not proceed. Your consultation is a complete, standalone clinical service in its own right, whether or not it results in treatment.

Because our service is remote, we rely on media evidence to meet the same safety standards expected of good medical practice — this is what allows your prescriber to safely verify and monitor your care without an in-person visit.

Before your first consultation, you’ll need to provide:

  • A copy of your photo ID, to verify your name and date of birth. Identity verification is a requirement for treating any patient — including confirming you’re not under the age of 18, and that we’re speaking with the correct patient throughout your care.
  • Your blood test report, if you’re providing your own — this must be the official laboratory report. Screenshots, summaries, or excerpts are not accepted.

Further evidence will be required as your treatment progresses, and this will be explained to you as part of your care.

Yes. All documents and evidence you submit — including your ID — are held securely within your patient management systems, in line with UK GDPR and medical record-keeping requirements. Your information is only accessed by those directly involved in your care, and is never shared beyond what’s needed to safely treat you. Full details are available in our Privacy Policy.

What treatment will I be prescribed?

BCC prescribes clinically approved prescription medicines for weight management. Your prescriber will recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your individual clinical profile, your health conditions, your other medications, and your personal circumstances. The decision is always made collaboratively — you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your options before any prescription is issued. No prescription will be issued without your informed consent.

Off-label prescribing means using a medicine for a purpose or in a way that is not covered by its official licence. This is legal and can be clinically appropriate when a prescriber determines it is the most suitable option for a patient. If off-label prescribing applies to you, your prescriber will explain their reasoning clearly and you will be asked to sign an additional consent form confirming you understand and agree before any prescription is issued.

Yes. If your prescriber determines that a different treatment approach would be more appropriate — based on your progress, how you are tolerating the medicine, or a change in your health — they will discuss this with you. No change will be made without your agreement. Your prescriber will explain any proposed change and ensure you understand what to expect.

If you have been on your indicated dose for six months and have not lost at least 5% of your starting body weight, your prescriber will conduct a formal review to assess whether continued treatment is appropriate. This review is done collaboratively — your prescriber will discuss the findings with you and the decision to continue or stop treatment will be made together. This review is an important safety and clinical effectiveness checkpoint.

What does my Ongoing Monthly Care cover?

Your Ongoing Monthly Care covers everything you need for continued treatment:

  • Your monthly video consultation with your prescriber
  • Your medication — dispensed by our partner pharmacy, with the cost forming part of your Ongoing Monthly Care. There is no separate bill for you to manage
  • Your blood tests
  • Consumables, including your sharps bin, pregnancy tests, and other supplies as needed

Your Monthly Care Cost is based on your individual treatment plan — the specific medicine and dose your prescriber determines is right for you. Because treatment is personalised, costs vary from patient to patient, and may also change over the course of your care as your dose is adjusted based on your progress.

Full pricing for your specific treatment plan is confirmed with you once your prescriber has completed your assessment.

Your Initial Consultation or Initial Consultation + Investigation service is paid separately, before your ongoing care begins, and falls outside of it.

After your initial consultation, if you’re deemed suitable for treatment, your first Ongoing Monthly Care invoice is issued, and treatment begins once payment is received.

Each month works the same way: you’ll receive an invoice for your next month’s care, which must be paid before your next appointment. If payment has not been received at least 7 days before your appointment, your treatment will be placed on hold until the outstanding balance is settled.

There is no recurring automated charge. Each month, you receive an invoice and a payment link, and payments continue for as long as you choose to seek treatment with us.

If you’re considering stopping treatment, please let us know so we can ensure continuity of your care.

How do consultations work?

All consultations are conducted by video call. You’ll receive an email with everything you need to prepare — the forms to complete and any evidence to upload so your prescriber can assess your progress. Your prescriber reviews everything before your appointment.

During your consultation, your prescriber reviews your progress, discusses how you’re finding treatment, and checks in on anything that’s changed since your last review — this is a genuine clinical review each month, not a formality. Consultations typically last around 20–30 minutes.

For your blood test, which happens every three months, we work with a fully regulated testing partner with numerous collection points across the country. Once your appointment is booked, you’ll receive a link to choose your nearest location and a convenient time to attend. The process takes around 20 minutes.

Everything else happens remotely.

To keep this service safely remote, your prescriber will ask you to upload evidence throughout your treatment. This may include an ID copy to verify age and identity, a short video or photo — such as confirming your weight — letters or documentation from other clinicians involved in your care, and any other medical documentation your prescriber requests. You’ll also be asked to complete forms and submit readings, such as blood pressure or blood glucose, where applicable.

If you are a woman of childbearing potential, you’ll need to confirm a negative pregnancy test each month before your consultation — the tests themselves are provided for you as part of your ongoing care.

If you miss a scheduled consultation, your treatment will be placed on hold. We cannot continue your treatment without the consultations, evidence, and investigations required for us to treat you safely. We will attempt to reach you to rebook — please let us know as soon as you can if you’re unable to attend, so we can find a suitable time together.

Is this safe?

Yes — when prescribed and monitored correctly, the medicines we use are safe and clinically proven. They are licensed by the MHRA and supported by extensive clinical trial data. At BCC, every patient is assessed individually before treatment starts, monitored every month throughout treatment, and blood-tested every three months. Our service operates under the CQC registration of Renovar Ventures Ltd and our prescriber is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. We follow the safety guidance of the MHRA and the GPhC throughout.

We run comprehensive blood panels at the start of treatment and throughout your monitoring. These cover liver function, kidney function, thyroid function, blood sugar and HbA1c, lipid profile, full blood count, and nutritional markers including Vitamin B12, ferritin, and Vitamin D. These markers are specifically relevant to prescription weight management treatment — the medicines can affect metabolism, appetite, and digestion in ways that impact these values over time. Regular monitoring means we catch any changes early.

You’ll receive materials and forms detailing potential side effects as part of your treatment.

Report any side effect to your prescriber promptly — do not wait if you are concerned. Contact us at leadprescriber@bodycompositionclinic.co.uk, and your prescriber will assess your symptoms and advise you on the appropriate next steps.

If you experience any side effect identified as severe in the materials provided to you, do not wait — call 999 immediately, as indicated in your materials.

Stop your medication immediately and contact your prescriber and your GP on the same day. The medicines prescribed at BCC are contraindicated in pregnancy. All female patients of childbearing potential are required to use effective contraception throughout treatment and to submit a negative pregnancy test before every prescription is issued. If you are planning a pregnancy, please inform your prescriber in advance — treatment needs to be stopped a defined period before trying to conceive, which varies by medicine.

How do I book?

Visit the Book Appointment page. You will be taken to our booking system where you can select the appropriate service, along with a consultation date and time based on availability, and pay your fee.

Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive the forms to complete and the evidence to upload ahead of your appointment.

Treatment is never guaranteed — it depends on your prescriber’s clinical assessment and judgement. Timelines vary based on the service you selected and how quickly your investigations can be completed.

For some patients, treatment can begin as soon as two to three days after their consultation. For others, it may take longer, depending on the investigations required, your availability to complete them, and clinic and laboratory capacity at the time.

After booking, you’ll receive an email with the necessary forms to complete. Please make sure to complete them in full — every section is needed, whether to support your prescriber’s clinical assessment or for the operational running of your care.

You’ll also receive an upload link where you can submit any required evidence.

More details on preparing for your initial consultation, along with further resources, are available in our Patient Information section.

Contact us at bookings@bodycompositionclinic.co.uk and we will get back to you.
